The "Silver Shredder"
story.......
The very first one I made was in
November of 1990.
That's right, NINETEEN
YEARS AGO.
The "Original" was cut and shaped,
then reshaped, and tweaked some more. NUMEROUS people played with it and gave
me input. (Even a couple guys who worked in the PEAVEY Custom
Shop here in town)
I used a 1957 Ben Franklin 90%
Silver Half Dollar to make it out of.
Once it was "perfected", I made them
out of different year coins for other people. They were well liked, but I
didn't have the ability to sell them then. (there was no "ebay" or "online
sales" back then)
Pickers from all around this area
that used my "Silver Shredder" really liked it. One was an old time "blues
man" from Natchez, MS.
In 1994, I became a Truck Driver and
just didn't have the time for music anymore. The last one I made was in 1994,
and that date has special meaning for me. (it is the one on the RIGHT in the
picture of the Millennium Pick)
I had honestly not thought of these
for years. But recently I decided to get back into playing. I pulled out
my old Acoustic guitar, and found the pick in the case.
If these are still loved like they
were back then, I will be making them more often.
| If you use my "Silver Shredder" Picks, your playing will be improved by tenfold. NOT !!!
If you use my "Silver Shredder" picks, you'll get a sound like no other pick on the market. NOT !!!
If you use my "Silver Shredder" Picks, you'll get more dates. Who Knows ???
If you use my "Silver Shredder" Picks, you'll be cool beyond the coprehension of mere mortals. Not real sure about that one either.
But I do know this............ If you use my "Silver Shredder" Picks, you won't want to use a "standard" pick ever again.
Are my "MedicineMan Silver Shredder"
picks any better than others? Not structurally. All coins of a certain
year are made of the same metals.
Where the "MedicineMan Silver Shredder" DOES excel
....... is in the SHAPE. It's built for SPEED and ACCURACY. FEELS Great in your fingers. Some sellers and
makers may try to tell you they are "The Original". They claim their product
is "unique" or "special".
I don't make
this claim, nor would I, because it's just NOT
TRUE.
There are also a couple of sellers each claiming to be the supplier of "Peso picks" to Billy Gibbons. Either he buys a LOT of picks from them ALL, or someone is hyping their claims. (???) |
Making Guitar
Picks out of coins and metal is NOT something "new". In fact, it's been done
for hundreds of years. There are many musicians that use guitar picks made mainly from
stainless steel, copper and hard anodized aluminum.
Coins produce good picks.
They have absolutely no flexibility like the extra heavy picks
and they sound great!
A famous artist who used a coin to play his guitar is Brian May,
(Queen).
He often used a six pence coin like a pick. Don't overpay
for someones inflated hype, and wild claims .
It means NOTHING who they "claim" is using their picks. All that matters is that "coin picks" are used by many Guitarists. Buy the pick you want and that best serves your
purposes.
|
| The Royal Canadian Mint released this “guitar-pick” shaped coin in 2009 as a
tribute to the Six String Nation Guitar, which contains 64 pieces of Canadian
treasures, like a piece of Bluenose II's deck, and gold from Maurice Richard's
Stanley Cup ring.

The decorative rosette design that encompasses the sound hole on the real
guitar is replicated on the coin, as is part of the Canadian flag motive that is
on the pick guard of the real guitar.
The mint has made just 30,000 of the coins, which each sell for $34.95.
| Brian May.......

Brian's rather unusual choice of guitar pick is a coin - an english sixpence,
which is a small circular coin with a serrated edge. He chose to use the
sixpence as a pick because he finds plastic plectrums too flexible. He holds the
coin very lightly and occasionally uses its serrated edge against the strings to
produce a rasp. For quiter sections, Brian will often pick the strings with his
fingers and only use the coin for the louder sections where more attack is
required. For his first solo tour, Brian actually had some sixpence sized coins
specially minted and these were on sale during the tour. |
This is THE "speed
pick" you need.
Outlasts normal
guitar picks 1000 to 1.
Pays for itself in
weeks.
Can be easily
"re-dressed" in minutes if it becomes worn. | The Medicineman Shredder is cut from a United States Half-Dollar.
The Half Dollar is preferrable to a "Quarter" due to the TINY size of picks made from quarters.
The Shredder fits in your fingers better, and allows for a much greater "purchase" area. (pun intended)
The metal is either the pre 1964 "90% Silver", or the post 1971 "90% copper" version.
| Cheaper than the
"peso" picks. More durable than the "silver" picks.
Easier on
your expensive strings than the "cut Cymbal" picks. |

My "Silver
Shredder" is a great "working pick", OR, Keepsake.
Keep one in your pocket for
a conversation piece.
Give one to a Friend. | FYI...... My "Original Medicineman Shredder"
design was made from a 1957 Franklin Half-Dollar because that date coincided with the 1957 Chevrolet Bel-Air Driven by my good friend and fellow band member. It was a RED 2-door. We had a lot of "Adventures" in that old car. Since that first one, I have made them with numerous dates.
